Pretzelfest to raise funds for spring beer celebration

Join Christian Moerlein Brewing Company and the organizers and supporters of the 2011 Bockfest for a kegtapping of the official Bockfest Beer this Friday, January 21. The first-ever Pretzelfest has been organized in Over-the-Rhine as a delicious, homegrown way to raise support for the 19th annual spring beer festival, being held March 4-6, 2011.

Pretzels came about as early as 610 AD, originally used as a reward by monks for good children who memorized their prayers. A few thousand years later “Bretzels” are now a symbol of good luck, prosperity, and the perfect accompaniment to a delicious beer.

Venue 222 is hosting the event which will be a fun night of food, music, and beer. The brew on tap is the Moerlein Emancipator; a German style Doppelbock featuring six varieties of uniquely blending malts, which create a dark, robust lager with a toasted character and complex hints of caramel and toffee.

The Cincinnati Dancing Pigs, the area’s premiere jug band, will be performing that night, and six local eateries (MOTR, Shadeau Breads, Taste of Belgium, EAT WELL Catering, Skirtz & Johnston, and Mecklenburg Gardens) are offering a variety of unique pretzel creations for attendees to sample.

Admission to the event is $35 and includes sampling of freshly baked pretzels, four drink tickets, a brat, and an entry into the raffle for the Ultimate Bockfest Weekend. You can purchase tickets at the door, but space is limited, so buy them online in advance up to two hours before the event.

All proceeds from Pretzelfest, Ultimate Bockfest Weekend, and the Arnold’s Bathtub Raffle (a chance to drive the famous Arnold’s bathtub in the Bockfest Parade) go directly to supporting Bockfest. This homegrown weekend relies on grassroots support, and what better way to show some Cincy love by drinking beer?

PretzelFest will take place this Friday, January 21 from 6pm to 10 pm at Venue 222, located at 222 E. 14th Street in historic Over-the-Rhine.

July was an exciting month in Cincinnati, with lots of news on major construction projects in the urban core. The Cincinnati Streetcar received a large federal grant, meaning construction will begin this fall. There were articles on Great American Tower, which is nearing completion, and the Christian Moerlein Lager House brewpub, now under construction in the Cincinnati Riverfront Park. David Ben completed his four-part series on how the reconstruction on Fort Washing Way in the late 1990s is paying off today.

Emancipator Doppelbock keg tapping at Arnold’s – 1/28

Christian Moerlein will be tapping the first keg of their Emancipator Doppelbock this Thursday, January 28 at Arnold’s Bar & Grill. Lasting from 4pm to 7pm, the event has no cover charge and will feature $4 Emancipators in a Moerlein Lagers & Ales pint glass (that you get to keep) with just $3 refills.

Arnold’s is located in downtown Cincinnati (map) and should get quite crowded for this event. When Christian Moerlein last hosted an event at Arnold’s on January 16 they sold out of all Moerlein Lagers & Ales and packed Arnold’s to the gills. So be sure to get there early so you don’t miss out on the great pint glass special and keg tapping.

According to Christian Moerlein:
Moerlein’s Emancipator Doppelbock is a German-style Doppelbock featuring six varieties of uniquely blended malts creating a robust dark lager with a toasted character and complex hints of caramel and toffee. Brewed in celebration of the repeal of prohibition in Ohio, Moerlein Emancipator continues to be a celebrated seasonal brew leading in to Bockfest in Cincinnati.

Christian Moerlein Celebrates Oktoberfest with a Keg Tapping

“Greater Cincinnati has so many wonderful Oktoberfest events,” declares Don Heinrich Tolzmann, President of the German-American Citizen League “We wanted to use this occasion to celebrate the start of the season.”

And really, is there a better way to start any season than with a good ‘ol fashioned keg tapping? In honor of the unofficial start of the Oktoberfest Season, Christian Moerlein Brewing Company and German-American Citizens League of Greater Cincinnati will host a ceremonial keg tapping of the seasonal Moerlein Oktoberfest. The tapping will occur as part of a social gathering on Friday, August 14 at Kopling Center (Google Map)

Mr. Manfred Schnetzer, a longtime member of the Kolping Society, will perform the honorary tapping promptly at 7pm, but the event runs from 5pm to midnight. In addition to the ceremony, Mr. Greg Hardman, President and CEO of Christian Moerlein Brewing Co., will give a brief presentation.

The event will feature live music by Die Vereinsmusikanten, German food, and the raffling of many unique items. A large stein collection will be on display with items for purchase. Moerlein Artist Jim Effler will be on hand to sign Commemorative Moerlein Oktoberfest posters. Admission and parking are both free.

If you’ve never tried Oktoberfest before, it’s delicious. Whether you can make it to the event or not, I recommend picking up a sixer to get you in the spirit.
