Monthly street fair to fill Main Street in Over-the-Rhine this weekend

August’s Second Sunday in OTR event will have more than 60 local vendors ranging from handmade jewelry to fine art and photography work. Other vendors will be selling items such as “upcycled” purses, locally designed t-shirts, wood-fired pizza, and even authentic Belgium waffles.

Second Sunday in OTR is a monthly street fair presented by the Over-the-Rhine Chamber of Commerce that takes place in the historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. The event closes Main Street to automobile traffic from 13th Street to Liberty Street in order to allow pedestrians to enjoy the many vendors, live music, street performers, food and beer without the worry of any automobiles.

This month’s street fair will include a free yoga session hosted by You Do Yoga at 12:30pm (Main at Woodward), a Samba parade led by Baba Charles from Peasley Community Center at 1:30pm (Main from 13th to Liberty), a cooking demonstration by celebrity chefs Jose Salazar and Summer Genetti at 2:30pm (1419 Main St., Falling Wall Condo), and a local talent show at 3pm (Main at Woodward at DJ booth).

Nearby at Neon’s Unplugged (map), live music will be provided by Messerly & Ewing from 12pm to 1:15pm, and KT & The Pickups from 1:30pm to 2:30pm.

The Second Sunday in OTR street fair runs from 12pm to 5pm, and is free and open to the public. Various on- and off-street automobile parking options are available nearby in addition to free bicycle parking and convenient Metro bus service (plan your trip).

Grapevine Friday progressive wine tasting in OTR’s Gateway Quarter – 8/6

Merchants within Over-the-Rhine’s Gateway Quarter district are hosting a progressive wine tasting on Friday, August 6 from 5pm to 7pm. The Grapevine First Friday Wine Tasting is held each month and features a different wine at each of the participating stores.

The progressive wine tasting takes place in a compact one block stretch of Vine Street in between 12th and 13th streets. Participating merchants are also encouraging those who do the Grapevine to check out some of the area’s other restaurants and bars like Senate, Lavomatic, Below Zero Lounge, Mixx Ultra Lounge, Neon’s Unplugged, and the newly opened Joe’s Diner.

This month participating Gateway Quarter merchants include Joseph Williams Home, Metronation, 4U Urban Fashion Boutique, MiCA 12/v, and Switch. The wine provided at each of the five locations is supplied by Market Wines located in historic Findlay Market. As a result, organizers say that if you enjoy one of the wine selections that you can visit Market Wines and purchase it there. This month’s wine selection will have a Spanish theme.

Parking is available at the 12th & Vine parking lot, the Gateway Quarter garage accessible from 12th Street and Central Parkway, and on-street metered spaces throughout the neighborhood. Free bicycle parking is also available in the immediate area, and several Metro bus routes (plan your trip) serve the area.

Cincinnati’s dramatic, multi-billion dollar riverfront revitalization nearly complete

Several decades ago Cincinnati leaders embarked on a plan to dramatically change the face of the city’s central riverfront. Aging industrial uses and a congested series of highway ramps was to be replaced by two new professional sports venues, six new city blocks of mixed-use development, a new museum, a central riverfront park, and parking garages that would lift the development out of the Ohio River’s 100-year flood plain.

Paul Brown Stadium, home of the Cincinnati Bengals, was one of the first pieces of the puzzle to fall into place. The $455 million football stadium kept the Bengals in Cincinnati and has received national praise for its architectural design while also entertaining sold-out crowds.

The next piece to fall into place was the reconstruction of Fort Washington Way which consolidated the stretch of highway and opened up land critical for the construction of yet another stadium and the mixed-use development which became known as The Banks. The 40% reduction in size was not the only accomplishment though. The reconstruction project also included the Riverfront Transit Center designed to one day house light rail connections and a sunken highway that could be capped with additional development or park space.

Following the reconstruction of Fort Washington Way, Riverfront Stadium was then partially demolished to make room for the construction of the $290 million Great American Ball Park. Once complete, Great American Ball Park began entertaining baseball fans at 81 home games each year and at a new Reds Hall of Fame & Museum. The new venue eliminated any need for Riverfront Stadium and thus led to its implosion in 2002.

The removal of Riverfront Stadium then freed up room for the construction of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center atop the first piece of a two-deck parking garage intended to both lift the new riverfront development out of the flood plain, and provide enough automobile parking to replace what was previously there in the form of surface lots and satisfy new parking demands created by the development.

The most recent piece of the puzzle has been the development of the initial phases of both the Cincinnati Riverfront Park and The Banks. The two separate projects are developing in complimentary fashion and are on similar time tables, and are both developing east to west from Great American Ball Park to Paul Brown Stadium. Recent news will add a modern streetcar line running through The Banks development that will transport people from the transformed riverfront into the Central Business District, Over-the-Rhine and beyond to Uptown.

The 45-acre, $120 million Cincinnati Riverfront Park is expected to become the crown jewel of an already nationally acclaimed Cincinnati Park System. The Banks meanwhile will bring thousands of new residents, workers and visitors to Cincinnati’s center city. The initial phase of both projects is expected to be complete in spring 2011 and will include 300 new residences, 80,000 square feet of retail space, Moerlein Lager House, Commuter Bike Facility, additional components of the two-deck parking garage, and the first elements of the park.

The transformation of Cincinnati’s central riverfront from aging industrial space to a vibrant mixed-use extension of downtown is not complete, but the two-decade old, $3 billion vision is finally nearing reality. And with full completion expected in the coming years, one of the remaining traces of Cincinnati’s industrial past will be replaced by a new vision for a 21st Century city and economy.

UC study identifies huge economic gains from new regional water district

The University of Cincinnati Economics Center for Education & Research recently conducted a study to determine whether expanding Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) would have beneficial impacts. They concluded that expanding the service would prevent a 14 percent rate increase, save taxpayers money, and generate additional money for the City of Cincinnati.

The study concluded that a regional water district would allow for more people to absorb operating costs, and thus prevent the anticipated rate increase and save taxpayers $24 million over the next ten years. Furthermore, the study asserted that the increased coverage will allow the City of Cincinnati to receive an additional $15 million from the transfer of assets – money that city officials say go towards helping fill a projected budget shortfall.

The economic analysis also cites that a new regional water district would generate an additional $33 million in economic activity annually, and lead to the creation of 300 new jobs. The new jobs alone are anticipated to inject an extra $10 million into the economy each year.

The financial benefits extend even further according to Cincinnati City Manager Milton Dohoney. He noted that a municipality owned water district, like GCWW, is barred under Ohio law from receiving payment from other jurisdictions. A regionally owned water district, on the other hand, is allowed to receive payment from outer municipalities, including those in other states.

As a result, many are now looking at an expanded regional water district to not only help the city shore up its finances, but also provide a step towards greater regional cooperation amongst municipalities.

“When we looked at the issue of a public regional water district, we approached it by asking whether expansion makes good economic sense,” says George Vredeveld, director of the University of Cincinnati Economics Center for Education & Research. “The analysis revealed that expansion will keep rates lower, create jobs and have a positive and lasting effect on the local economy.”

The next step is for the City to submit its plan for court approval, and if approved, voters will have the opportunity to vote whether or not to adopt the plan. A public vote on the sale of GCWW to a regional authority is now required following the approval of Issue 8 last November.

American Sign Museum provides unique look into Cincinnati’s past

You do not need to have the taste of an art critic or the knowledge of an historian in order to appreciate the beauty of the neon memories on display at the American Sign Museum in Walnut Hills. The museum is filled to the brim with historic signs that in their own way act as shimmering archives of Cincinnati’s past, providing us with an unwritten narrative of our own history.

The museum, hidden in Walnut Hills, opened its doors in 2005 and is the only public sign museum in the country. The space currently houses some 3,800 signs and pieces of memorabilia, some dating back to the late 19th century. It is, however, not always the objects themselves that provide the real attraction.

”We, of course, like to have the signs in the museum, but it’s as or sometimes more important to know the story behind them…they have more meaning that way,” said founder and museum director Tod Swormstedt.

One such example Swormstedt points to is the story surrounding an old Georgiton’s Pizza sign that last stood in the back parking lot of Mac’s Pizza Pub in Clifton Heights. According to Swormstedt, soon after opening his restaurant/bar Mac renovated his back parking lot and brought down the old sign.

He decided that it would be best to donate it to Swormstedt’s collection, and as the sign was brought down from its metal post a bit of history was, literally, uncovered. Once viewed up close it was apparent that Georgiton’s Pizza had simply been carved into sheet metal and layered over an older Papa Dino’s sign.

After some investigating, it was discovered that two brothers had once operated Papa Dino’s out of the building that now houses Mac’s Pizza Pub. The brothers eventually had a falling out that caused them to split up and form rival pizza restaurants. While one left and took the name Papa Dino’s just one block north to Calhoun Street, the other stayed and simply changed the name on the sign to Georgiton’s Pizza. Today, Papa Dino’s is still in business at the corner of Calhoun Street and Clifton Avenue, and although Georgiton’s Pizza is now just a memory, we still have two great pizza joints within one block of each other in Clifton.

You can currently view the Papa Dino’s/Georgiton’s Pizza sign and its story at the Cincinnati Art Museum. It is part of their Artworks: The American Road series that runs through August 29th.
