Christian Moerlein Celebrates Oktoberfest with a Keg Tapping

“Greater Cincinnati has so many wonderful Oktoberfest events,” declares Don Heinrich Tolzmann, President of the German-American Citizen League “We wanted to use this occasion to celebrate the start of the season.”

And really, is there a better way to start any season than with a good ‘ol fashioned keg tapping? In honor of the unofficial start of the Oktoberfest Season, Christian Moerlein Brewing Company and German-American Citizens League of Greater Cincinnati will host a ceremonial keg tapping of the seasonal Moerlein Oktoberfest. The tapping will occur as part of a social gathering on Friday, August 14 at Kopling Center (Google Map)

Mr. Manfred Schnetzer, a longtime member of the Kolping Society, will perform the honorary tapping promptly at 7pm, but the event runs from 5pm to midnight. In addition to the ceremony, Mr. Greg Hardman, President and CEO of Christian Moerlein Brewing Co., will give a brief presentation.

The event will feature live music by Die Vereinsmusikanten, German food, and the raffling of many unique items. A large stein collection will be on display with items for purchase. Moerlein Artist Jim Effler will be on hand to sign Commemorative Moerlein Oktoberfest posters. Admission and parking are both free.

If you’ve never tried Oktoberfest before, it’s delicious. Whether you can make it to the event or not, I recommend picking up a sixer to get you in the spirit.

Cincy BeerFest 2009

Coming this weekend to Covington’s Roebling Point is the 2009 Cincy BeerFest. From the creators of The Midwest Winter Beer Festival, this outdoor festival will feature 2 sessions where over 84 craft beers (full list) will be up for tasting. There will also be live music at each session, and food will be available to purchase from vendors or from any of the 5 establishments in the neighborhood.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Big Joe Duskin Foundation whose goal is “to produce as many in-school educational music presentations as possible, in as many schools as possible, to reach as many children as possible, using local professional musicians” and is all done in memory of Big Joe Duskin who passed away in 2007. Developing our youngest citizens and helping them reach artistic potential is one way to ensure that the Cincinnati region grows into a vibrant, diverse, and artsy area. By coming out and having a good time on July 25, you will be doing your part in making that happen.

Additionally, The Roebling Point Bar Association for Community Improvements will also benefit from the event. The area along Greenup Street in Covington at the base of the Roebling Suspension Bridge has been rapidly improving over the last few years and the bars and restaurants have bonded together to bring a unified approach to neighborhood improvements.

Session passes are available for $35 in advance and $40 on the day of the event. To order your wristband now, and save, go here.

Burger Beer back in the ‘Nati

The Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Co. is on a roll lately. Hot off of their Little Kings re-branding, they are now about the bring back one of Cincinnati’s most fabled beers.

On Friday, May 29th Burger Beer will be relaunched at the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. The event will go from 6pm to 11pm (short presentation at 7pm) with the first 600 paid admissions ($10) will receive a FREE commemorative Burger Classic Beer Relaunch Celebration/Crosley Field Remembered retro t-shirt.

At the event fans will be able to visit the “Crosley Field Remembered” special exhibit as well as the other permanent exhibits throughout the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, enjoy some Burger Beer and watch the away Reds game (vs. Milwaukee) in the Palace of the Fans Theater beginning at 7pm.

The relaunching will bring back both Burger Classic Beer and Burger Light Beer. The beers will be available throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana for around $5.99 per twelve pack of cans and are considered full-flavored yet light-bodied American styled pilsner beers.

History:
Greg Hardman, president of Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Company, has been working aggressively to restore the great Cincinnati beer brands that once made the area known world-wide for its brewing heritage.

Part of that heritage is Burger Beer which was first established in 1880 with the Burger family’s malting business. The family began brewing their own beers in 1934 following the repeal of prohibition and was one of the first brewers in the nation, and first in Cincinnati, to can its beer. Then during World War II, Burger was one of only a handful of brewers selected by the government to supply camouflaged cans of Burger beer to military personnel throughout the world.

Burger Beer was also famous for its marketing slogan, “Vas You Efer in Zinzinnati?” that played off the fondness for Cincinnati’s German Heritage, and was a nationwide hit.

One of the most significant parts of Burger’s past is its relationship with the Reds organization. During the days of Crosley Field legendary Reds broadcaster, Waite Hoyt, during the nearly quarter century that Burger Beer sponsored the Reds radio broadcasts. Hoyt would frequently plug the local beer and would refer to home runs, hit as Crosley, as being destined for the outer reaches of “Burgerville.”
