Christian Moerlein inducted into Beer Barons Hall of Fame

To celebrate the 194th birthday of Cincinnati brewer Christian Moerlein, he was welcomed into the Beer Barons Hall of Fame as its first member. By the time Moerlein turned 60, his brewery was one of the largest in the nation, exporting beer across the county and internationally. More from the Cincinnati Enquirer:

“Christian Moerlein was way up here,” said Greg Hardman, the managing partner of the $10-million restaurant and CEO of the revived Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. He raised his hand way above his head to indicate Moerlein’s standing. Lowering his hand to his belt, he said, “this is where the list of the other great brewers in town starts.”

Know Theatre hosts Little Kings kickoff tour

Beer, comedy, and a good cause make for a lively night at Know Theater , located on 1120 Jackson Street {map} in the arts district of Over-the-Rhine. Friday May 20th, Little King’s Cream Ale kicks off its Groovy World Tour with spokesperson Kevin Downey Jr., in the city where Little Kings originated. The tour will visit all 40 states that currently sell Little Kings Beer.

At The Know Theater, the evening’s festivities begins at 7:30 PM with special prices on Little Kings, and music provided by DJ Blakkoutt. The party moves to the stage at 9:30 pm with a comedy show hosted by Metromix’s Katie Clavey, with performances by local comedian Alex Stone and New York City comedian, Kevin Downey Jr.

Downey Jr’s comedy act is not your average stand up routine. “If you’re into wacky impressions, props and puppets, this is not your kind of show,” Downey Jr. said. “If you’re into something alternative and funny, and Little Kings Beer, the Know Theater is the place to be this Friday.”

As part of the Groovy World Tour, fans of Little Kings Beer can proclaim their love with a King’s Proclamation, a 140 character or less statement explaining why customers love Little Kings Beer. Once a proclamation is made, customers have a chance to win a free T-shirt.

“A proclamation is a one or two line bit about the beer or the magic that happens when you drink Little Kings, “Downey Jr. said. “For example, Little Kings Cream Ale is like jazz for your taste buds.”

You can purchase tickets for the Little Kings Cream Ale Comedy Tour at the Know Theater for $15 per person or online. All proceeds benefit the Know Theater. Included in the ticket price is entrance to the after party at Lunar night club, located on Elm Street and beginning at 11:30 pm., where guests can finish the night off in style.

Pretzelfest to raise funds for spring beer celebration

Join Christian Moerlein Brewing Company and the organizers and supporters of the 2011 Bockfest for a kegtapping of the official Bockfest Beer this Friday, January 21. The first-ever Pretzelfest has been organized in Over-the-Rhine as a delicious, homegrown way to raise support for the 19th annual spring beer festival, being held March 4-6, 2011.

Pretzels came about as early as 610 AD, originally used as a reward by monks for good children who memorized their prayers. A few thousand years later “Bretzels” are now a symbol of good luck, prosperity, and the perfect accompaniment to a delicious beer.

Venue 222 is hosting the event which will be a fun night of food, music, and beer. The brew on tap is the Moerlein Emancipator; a German style Doppelbock featuring six varieties of uniquely blending malts, which create a dark, robust lager with a toasted character and complex hints of caramel and toffee.

The Cincinnati Dancing Pigs, the area’s premiere jug band, will be performing that night, and six local eateries (MOTR, Shadeau Breads, Taste of Belgium, EAT WELL Catering, Skirtz & Johnston, and Mecklenburg Gardens) are offering a variety of unique pretzel creations for attendees to sample.

Admission to the event is $35 and includes sampling of freshly baked pretzels, four drink tickets, a brat, and an entry into the raffle for the Ultimate Bockfest Weekend. You can purchase tickets at the door, but space is limited, so buy them online in advance up to two hours before the event.

All proceeds from Pretzelfest, Ultimate Bockfest Weekend, and the Arnold’s Bathtub Raffle (a chance to drive the famous Arnold’s bathtub in the Bockfest Parade) go directly to supporting Bockfest. This homegrown weekend relies on grassroots support, and what better way to show some Cincy love by drinking beer?

PretzelFest will take place this Friday, January 21 from 6pm to 10 pm at Venue 222, located at 222 E. 14th Street in historic Over-the-Rhine.

Christian Moerlein Lager House

July was an exciting month in Cincinnati, with lots of news on major construction projects in the urban core. The Cincinnati Streetcar received a large federal grant, meaning construction will begin this fall. There were articles on Great American Tower, which is nearing completion, and the Christian Moerlein Lager House brewpub, now under construction in the Cincinnati Riverfront Park. David Ben completed his four-part series on how the reconstruction on Fort Washing Way in the late 1990s is paying off today.

Jake Speed and the Freddies at Arnold’s 1/16

This Saturday, January 16 Cincinnati’s oldest bar, Arnold’s Bar & Grill, will welcome Jake Speed and the Freddies for a live performance brought to you by Christian Moerlein.

There will be beer specials on Christian Moerlein/Hudepohl Schoenling’s wide variety of Cincinnati beers, and Moerlein representatives will even be there all night handing out free Christian Moerlein gear. Arnold’s will be serving a special menu that night as consisting of different foods made with each of the Moerlein beers.

Jake Speed and the Freddies will start at 8pm and play throughout the night. Arnold’s Bar & Grill offers one of Cincinnati’s most unique and comfortable bar scenes, and is easily accessible located in the heart of downtown Cincinnati (map). There is no cover charge for this event.
